Alex Ovechkin Had A Hell Of A Weekend
Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin became the 43rd player in NHL history to reach 500 goals when he scored in the second period against Ottawa Sunday. But that was arguably only the third-coolest thing he did this weekend.
Ovechkin’s 500th was quite easy, for him. Jason Chimera passed from behind the net to a wide-open Ovechkin, who flicked it past Senators goalie Andrew Hammond.
The game was well out of hand at that point, but Ovechkin one-upped himself in the third period with an even better goal for No. 501. The 30-year-old worked over Erik Karlsson, and passed Lanny McDonald on the all-time list:
The most impressive goal in the Capitals’ two weekend games, however, was definitely Saturday’s end-to-end overtime winner sparked by a Braden Holtby save. What Ovechkin did to the Rangers should be a crime:
Ovechkin, who has played in 801 games, was the fifth-fastest NHL player to reach 500. Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Brett Hull, and Mike Bossy were quicker. That’s decent company.
