Ignacio Buse, 22, and Paul played three hours in heat and humidity before the former prevailed 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3 to earn his first ATP title on the clay courts in Germany. Five games into the second set, Buse required treatment for dizziness but returned to the court and recovered to win the decisive third set.
The key to the match came in that set, when Paul staved off four break points in the second game but lost, leading Buse to a 3-0 advantage. Paul couldn't recover.
Buse is the first player from Peru to win on the ATP Tour since Luis Homa did it in 2007.
Geneva Open
Learner Tien defeated Italy's Mariano Navone 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to take the tournament title in Switzerland.
It is Tien's first tournament win on clay courts, crucial heading into the French Open, where play begins Sunday. Tien, at 20, became the youngest American man to win a title on a clay court in Europe since Michael Chang did it at age 17 in 1989 when he won the French Open before he got his driver's license.
Chang now coaches Tien, and they have put much effort into improving Tien's game on clay. This is his first ATP Tour victory on the surface.
Tien, seeded fourth, defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, Alex Michelsen and second-seeded Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan to advance to the final.
