Bernard Hopkins Had A Rough Saturday Night
Sergey Kovalev knocked down Bernard Hopkins in the first round of Saturday night's match. (That's how we got the photo at the top of this post.) Though the 49-year-old somehow got back up—and stayed on his feet long enough to go the distance—the fight did not get better for Hopkins.
Kovalev completely dominated Hopkins on his way to a unanimous decision, including a final round in which the Russian landed 38 punches. For the entire match, Kovalev landed 166 punches on 585 swings; Hopkins connected on 65 of 195. With the victory, Kovalev now possesses three of the four light-heavyweight belts. Adonis Stevenson holds the last one.
Hopkins will turn 50 on Jan. 15. We'll see if he wants to keep fighting after his birthday.
