All eyes were on centers Sidney Crosby and Connor Bedard.
Crosby, the future Hall of Famer who has captained the Penguins to three Stanley Cups and opened his 19th season, had a goal, while Bedard, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft who has been labeled as the latest generational talent, tallied an assist for Chicago.
Nick Foligno had a goal and an assist, Ryan Donato and Cole Guttman also scored and Corey Perry had two assists for the Blackhawks.
Chicago goaltender Petr Mrazek made 38 saves.
In addition to Crosby, Bryan Rust scored for the Penguins.
Pittsburgh goaltender Tristan Jarry made 32 saves.
In the first, Kris Letang sent a pass toward the slot from the right-wing boards next to the bottom of the right circle. Rust, angling toward the near post, tipped the puck under Mrazek's pads to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead at the 7:04 mark of the period.
At 11:56 of the second, Crosby increased the Penguins' lead to 2-0. He took a pass from Jake Guentzel and swept the puck between the skates of defenseman Alex Vlasic and past Mrazek's outstretched stick.
The Blackhawks believed that Marcus Pettersson, who had the secondary assist, was offside, but they lost the challenge.
Donato made it to 2-1 at 15:37 of the second, his first goal with Chicago. At the top of the crease, he got a rebound of a Vlasic shot and backhanded it past Jarry. Bedard got the secondary assist.
At 10:05 of the third, Guttman tied it. Seth Jones' pass found Guttman near the right hash marks, and he beat Jarry glove side.
Dickinson scored from the right dot while falling with a shot that glanced off Jarry's glove to make it 3-2, and Foligno added an empty-netter with 1:27 left.
