Mandatory Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios will undergo surgery on his pitching elbow Wednesday to address a stress fracture as well as potential loose bodies or ligament issues, MLB.com reported on Saturday.
Berrios, 31, has been dealing with the injury since early in spring training. He has yet to pitch in the majors this season.
"There may be some ligament stuff going on," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said on Saturday. "They're going to figure that out when they're in there."
Inflammation in Berrios' elbow initially was discovered during a routine MRI for insurance purposes when he was still hoping to play for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.
Berrios went 9-5 with a 4.17 ERA in 31 games (30 starts) last season, which included his first-ever stint on the injured list in late September with elbow inflammation. He missed the entire postseason, with Toronto losing the World Series in seven games to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Berrios is 108-82 with a 4.08 ERA in 275 career games (273 starts) for the Minnesota Twins (2016-21) and Blue Jays.
