Calvin Pryor Blames Rishard Matthews's Injury On Ryan Tannehill's Bad Throw
On the Dolphins’ third play from scrimmage in their 38-20 loss to the Jets, Ryan Tannehill threw a short pass behind Rishard Matthews. When Matthews turned for the ball—it went past him—Jets safety Calvin Pryor slammed into Matthews’s torso. He would leave the game with what were described as rib and chest injuries. Pryor would pump his fist, and that pissed Tannehill off.
At his postgame press conference, Tannehill criticized Pryor for celebrating as Matthews was crumpled and shaken on the turf.
“That’s kind of a classless move to celebrate when a guy is injured. Obviously, it was a good hit, a clean hit. But to celebrate when a guy is down is a classless move.”
Well, Pryor took issue with Tannehill’s assertion that his celebration was about Matthews’s injury, rather than about stopping Miami on third down. He also took a shot at Tannehill’s pass that hung Matthews out to dry.
Pryor’s hit was definitely clean, but it wasn’t particularly great—it didn’t break up the play, though it probably would have if Tannehill’s throw had been on the money. Which, I guess, does put the blame right back on the QB.
