Conor McGregor Fined $150K For Throwing Beverages At The Diaz Brothers
Photo credit: John Locher/ [object Object] Before Conor McGregor took a narrow decision win over Nate Diaz at UFC 202, the rivals squared off and threw a bunch of water bottles at each other after McGregor arrived late to a press conference. It was a relatively harmless and entertaining spectacle, one that certainly hyped up the fight. McGregor, however, will have to pay a hefty fine for losing it and hucking water bottles and soda cans at the smirking Diazes.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission fined McGregor $150,000 this afternoon. That amount is five percent of the $3 million purse that McGregor earned at the fight. They initially wanted to fine him twice as much, but they decided that $300,000 was too much for a beverage tussle that left one security guard with minor injuries, even though there’s a precedent of fining fighters 10 percent for pre-match scuffles.
“I have a really hard time with a $300,000 fine for throwing a water bottle,” said NSAC chairman, Anthony Marnell. “Yes, someone could have gotten seriously hurt. No one did. Yes, they could have set the building on fire. They didn’t. They were throwing cans at each other like children.”
Diaz was supposed to have a disciplinary hearing today, but it’s been postponed. Here, watch them go at it again.
