Cops Say Sheldon Richardson Raced Bentley 143 MPH, Refused To Pull Over
New York Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson is facing charges of resisting arrest along with “numerous traffic violations” after refusing to pull over for a traffic stop near St. Louis earlier this month, a local prosecutor announced today. But what really stands out are the speeds that police said Richardson reached before he stopped; the probable cause statement from the O’Fallon Police Department said a radar gun clocked his 2014 Bentley Flying Spur W12 going 122, 135, and 143 miles per hour.
Here’s how police described what happened on July 14 in the probable cause statement, which was obtained by the :
(Cops incorrectly identified Richardson’s Bentley as a Silver Spur, which is an old Rolls-Royce limosine model.)
Afterward, summonses were issued for Richardson and he was “released without further incident,” St. Charles County prosecutor Tim Lohma said. Nobody else in the Bentley was charged. According to the probable cause statement, police also believed that Richardson should have been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, but Lohmar told the that his office felt there wasn’t enough evidence on that charge.
Richardson is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 27 for his arraignment.
As for whatever punishment he might face from the league, it will be on top of missing the first four games of the season—which Richardson will spend suspended without pay for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. The violation, according to multiple reports, was testing positive for marijuana.
