Mandatory Credit: David Banks-USA TODAY Sports The Chicago Cubs have seen enough from their former ace Kyle Hendricks and have taken him out of the starting rotation, according to manager Craig Counsell.
Hendricks has seven starts this season, an 0-4 record and an ERA of 10.57.
Counsell told reporters Tuesday that he wasn't sure whether the move would be permanent.
"Our pitching is precarious enough right now that we can't (commit) to anything long-term," Counsell said. "We are going day-by-day with a lot of this right now, and I think we should.
"The goal still is to get Kyle on track and get him back in the rotation. That's absolutely what I'd like to do, yeah."
Hendricks came off the injured list to start at Pittsburgh May 12 and gave up only two hits and one run, striking out five and walking four.
The home rematch with the Pirates was a disaster, however, as the right-hander was pummeled for 11 hits and eight runs (seven earned) over 4 2/3 innings.
Pitching every one of his 11 big-league seasons with the Cubs, Hendricks was a big part of the team's World Series title in 2016, starting twice and allowing only one earned run in the Fall Classic against Cleveland.
Hendricks is 93-73 in 254 career games (253 starts) with a 3.63 ERA and is making $16.5 million this season after exercising his option for 2024.
