Because Markstrom was confirmed too sick to play after the 5 p.m. local deadline, the Flames signed emergency backup goaltender Dustin Nickel to an amateur tryout agreement to serve as backup to Dan Vladar.
If the team had made a decision before 5 p.m., top prospect goaltender Dustin Wolf could have been recalled from the AHL Calgary Wranglers.
Vladar made starts in consecutive games for the first time this season.
Markstrom, the Flames' No. 1 goalie, is 5-7-2 this season with a 2.93 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage.
