Gift Guide Roundup: Gifts For People Who Like To Read
Last week, we asked you to recommend some books for people who do the whole gift-giving thing. Here's what you came up with.
Perfume. Funny story: in college I fell asleep with some movie channel on and woke up about 30 minutes into the adaptation of this book. Sort of intrigued by the air of creepiness, I kept watching. Seeing the insane things that started happening without the proper backstory is still one of the craziest movie-watching experiences I've ever had. So yeah, read the book. [ Amazon]
The Stench. A novel from the former SNL writer who brought the world those classic Deep Thoughts pieces. [ Amazon]
Red or Dead. A fictionalized account of Bill Shankley's Liverpool. Some fans of his earlier work, The Damned Utd, were a bit put-off by the writing style but our own Tim Marchman called it "maybe the best novel I've ever read about sports." [ Amazon]
Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said. Ah, good ol' PKD. A stylistically bad writer whose ideas and stories are so great that the flaws don't really matter. [ Amazon]
The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicles, Day 1). The Kingkiller Chronicles are the new Song of Ice and Fire so you might as well catch on now. Plus, they are supposed to be amazing. [ Amazon]
Savage Detectives. For the lover of meandering tales told from multiple points of view, or the literature proto-snob who's looking for the next book on the Hipster Books 101 list. [ Amazon]
Skippy Dies. According to Tom Ley, "Skippy Dies is one of the best books I've read in a long time. It's like Dead Poets Society if Dead Poets Society carried some real weight and didn't suck." [ Amazon]
Basketball Jones. A series of essays on basketball and race. [ Amazon]
