Henrik Stenson Outduels Phil Mickelson To Win British Open, Set Records
Henrik Stenson buried a 20-foot birdie on 18 at the British Open to finish the final round a ridiculous eight under par, winning his first major. Stenson’s four days at Royal Troon broke or set a number of records:
His final round 63 tied the record for lowest final round ever to win a major
His 20 under par tied the record for lowest score to par in a major
His 264 is the lowest 72-hole score in a major
Stenson went into the final round up one stroke on Phil Mickelson, and the two battled down the stretch. Mickelson shot a six-under to finish 17 strokes below par, 11 strokes ahead of third place J.B. Holmes, for his 11th second place finish in a major.
Stenson’s previous best major finish was second place, at the 2013 British Open.
