Officials' Timing Blunder Hurts Clemson; FG Attempt Falls Short
Greg Huegel’s 44-yard field goal attempt fell short after Clemson found themselves without a chance to run an additional play when officials allowed several seconds to run off the clock after a first down late in the first half of tonight’s national championship.
An irate Dabo Swinney demanded answers from officials, but none seemed to be coming; had the clock stopped until the ball was placed and ready for play, the Tigers could have spiked the ball and then run another play, having had a time out in reserve and 15 seconds on the clock. Instead, Swinney was forced to call the time out and set up the field goal directly.
