Iceland Channel The Power Of Odin, Complete Wild Stoppage-Time Comeback
Screencap via ESPN The mighty Iceland national team trailed Finland by a goal as today’s World Cup qualifying match rolled into stoppage time. Clearly imbued with the power of the Norse gods, they turned it all the way around and left with a 3-2 win.
After giving up a 90th-minute corner, a Finnish defender was apparently paralyzed and decided to just sort of let Alfred Finnbogason have a clean crack at a header. Finnbogason converted right between the legs of the keeper, tying it at 2-2.
With the clock 40 seconds past the supposed end of extra time, an Iceland defender looped what would be the last kick of the game into the box. Finland, at this point numb to the idea of jumping, allowed two Icelanders to get their heads on the ball, and Ragnar Sigurdsson to score the easiest winner of his career.
Condolences to Iceland’s 2018 World Cup opponents, who will inevitably be forced to re-evaluate their programs after Iceland stomps them.
