Michael Pineda Again Isn't Discreet About His Pine Tar, Gets Ejected
The last time Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda faced the Red Sox—on April 10—he clearly had pine tar on his hand. No one on the Red Sox brought it up, and the Yankees won. Tonight, Pineda again used pine tar, slapping on his neck before the second inning. Red Sox manager John Farrell spoke up this time.
Farrell came out of the dugout and asked the umpiring crew to check the obvious splotch on Pineda's neck. Home plate umpire Gerry Davis went through the motions, and subsequently ejected Pineda from the game.
Though pine tar is technically an illegal substance for pitchers, few in baseball really care, as long as a pitcher doesn't make it obvious. Pineda did not try to hide it at all, and Farrell took the opportunity to make Joe Girardi go to his bullpen early.
