Rafael Nadal's Second-Round Opponent Didn't Stand A Chance
Petr David Josek/ [object Object] Robin Haase, a Dutch professional tennis player ranked No. 46 in the world, drew Rafael Nadal in the second round of the French Open on Tuesday, ending things at 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. He was 30.
Haase will be remembered for nobly trying to mix up his tactics in the face of an impregnable foe, stirring in some shameless moonball—when you give up on hitting hard and instead sail the ball high, spinny, and deep—and audacious drop shots. Sometimes this worked out for him.
But mostly it did not. Haase will be remembered more for spiking the chair ump.
He is survived by Nadal, who won a crushing 79 percent of points on serve, including 85 percent of second serve points, and intends to dine on world No. 63 Nikoloz Bashiashvili in the third round.
