Replay Review Doesn't Prevent Umpires From Completely Blowing Call
In the seventh inning of last night's game between the Rockies and Cardinals, Matt Carpenter went to first after seemingly being hit by a Franklin Morales pitch. The Rockies challenged the play, and after a lengthy replay review, the original call was upheld despite it being pretty damn clear to everyone at home that the ball never touched Carpenter.
The Cardinals won the game 8-0, so this blown call was mostly meaningless, but it still presents a bit of a worst-case scenario for the replay system as a whole. The umpires spent a loooong time with those head sets on—the broadcasters kept remarking on how long the review was taking—and still blew the call. The best way to get people complaining about how much time replay reviews add to games is to have umpires getting calls wrong even after making everyone sit around and wait while they make up their minds.
