Report: Rockies' Charlie Condon gets record-tying signing bonus
Georgia's Charlie Condon (24) rounds the bases after hitting a home run during Game 3 of the Super NCAA Regional against NC State at Foley Field on Monday, June 10, 2024 in Athens, Ga. NC State won 8-5. Charlie Condon is in agreement with the Colorado Rockies on a deal that matches the largest signing bonus offered to a drafted player in Major League Baseball history, ESPN reported Friday.
The $9.25 million bonus offered to Condon, whom Colorado drafted third overall on Sunday, is the same amount the Cincinnati Reds reportedly offered Thursday to No. 2 pick Chase Burns, a right-hander out of Wake Forest.
Second baseman Travis Bazzana, who went first overall to the Cleveland Guardians, signed a deal on Friday that included an $8.95 million bonus.
Condon, 21, played two seasons at the University of Georgia and won the 2024 Golden Spikes Award, given to the best player in college baseball.
He led the NCAA in batting average (.433) and home runs (37) last season, becoming the third player ever to lead the nation in both categories. The 6-foot-6, 216-pound slugger also paced the NCAA in slugging percentage (1.009) and OPS (1.565) as he led the Bulldogs to a super regional.
Condon's signing bonus is $50,000 more than the Pittsburgh Pirates gave to right-hander Paul Skenes, drafted first overall in 2023. Skenes started the All-Star game for the National League on Tuesday.
A third baseman at Georgia, Condon is expected to move to the outfield with the Rockies.
