Starling Marte And Gregory Polanco Combine For Rare Slice Of History With Double-Header Dingers
credits: Gene J. Puskar | source: [object Object] History has a habit of repeating itself over and over in sports, especially in baseball. Saturday afternoon Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco got in some history-making of their own: they became the third teammates in MLB history to amass back-to-back home runs in both games of a double-header. This unlikely occurrence hasn’t happened in over 50 years:
Per MLB.com, the other players to accomplish this feat were Frank Thomas and Dick Groat—also Pirates—in 1957, and Sal Bando and Reggie Jackson of the Athletics in 1968.
Marte and Polanco are having solid seasons for the Pirates heading into the All Star break: Marte is hitting .284 to go along with 13 homers and 43 RBIs; Polanco’s batting average is just .234 on the season, but he’s cranked out 16 home runs and driven in 51 runs, and his .825 OPS is by far a career high.
The Pirates may be struggling to play .500 ball this season, and currently sit fourth in the NL Central, but at least Marte and Polanco made a cool piece of history along the way.
