The Cardinals Lost Their 23rd Game
Photo: [object Object] Héctor Rondón got out of his own ninth-inning jam as the Chicago Cubs edged the St. Louis Cardinals today, 9-8.
With a one-run lead, Rondón allowed Stephen Piscotty and Matt Adams to reach base to start the inning, but retired the next three batters and earned his eighth save of the season. The Cubs reliever struck out Yadier Molina and Randal Grichuk, then induced a groundout from pinch-hitter Jedd Gyorko to finish the game.
Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martínez was undone by a six-run second frame. He kept pitching and struck out seven over five innings, but the poor start was too big for St. Louis to overcome. Kris Bryant added three more runs to Chicago’s lead with a sixth-inning homer off reliever Seung-hwan Oh.
The Cardinals are one game over .500. There’s always the next game!
