The U.S. Open Is Finally Getting A Retractable Roof
In a few years, the U.S. Open will no longer be the most fogeyish Grand Slam. The USTA announced this morning that it will build a long-sought retractable roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium. How exactly they plan to do that—Ashe was built over a landfill and previous studies seemed to indicate a roof was structurally impossible—should be sorta answered tomorrow morning at a press conference. The Open has had five consecutive Monday men's finals due to rain. Bloomberg reports the roof could be in place as soon as 2016.
The architects who built Ford Field, the Red Bulls arena in Harrison, N.J. and Arthur Ashe Stadium—generally agreed to be a monstrosity, though it does give integrity to a really gorgeous tennis campus— are reportedly going to design the roof.
