There Was Yet Another Immaculate Inning Pitched Last Night
So this is officially some sort of trend. Last night, Garrett Richards struck out three straight Houston Astros on just nine pitches, tossing the fourth immaculate inning of the season. There has never been more than four such innings tossed in a single season—that number was last reached in 2002—and now we've got more than half a season of baseball to see if that record can be broken.
Richards joins Justin Masterson ( who did this just two days ago!), Cole Hamels, and Brad Boxberger in 2014's Immaculate Inning Club. He got there by overpowering three helpless Astros with a cruel combination of heat and bendy breaking stuff. Poor Matt Dominguez saw three straight pitches in the high 90s, and he couldn't do a damn thing with any of them. Here's what Richards unleashed during the second inning (via Brooks Baseball)
Now all that remains to be seen is who will make history by pitching the fifth immaculate inning of the season. I'm rooting for Bartolo Colon to be the one.
