Towson University Diving Coach Charged In Locker Room Recording Case
Towson University diving coach Maureen Mead has been charged in Baltimore County Circuit Court with felony interception of a communication, as well as misdemeanor peeping tom and altering of physical evidence charges, according to online court records. The charges relate to an October incident where members of Towson’s women’s swimming and diving team found a phone recording them in the locker room. The locker room is not accessible to the public.
The charges were first reported by the Baltimore Sun.
The fallout from the recording has rocked the swimming and diving team. Mead, head coach Pat Mead (her husband), and assistant coach Adrienne Phillips have all reportedly been placed on administrative leave, while first-year assistant Jake Shrum has taken over interim head coaching duties. The University also decided the team would withdraw from their final meet of the calendar year, after reports that the team was planning on boycotting it to protest the slow pace of the university’s investigation.
According to the Baltimore Sun, the university released the following statement in response to a request for comment about the charges:
“The investigation continues regarding other members of the coaching staff, and we will provide more information when it becomes available. The well-being of our student-athletes remains and will continue to be our top priority.”
