Veteran MLB ump named World Series crew chief
Sep 25, 2023; San Francisco, California, USA; umpire Mark Carlson (6) calls San Diego Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. (not pictured) safe at first base during the sixth inning against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park. Mandatory Credit: Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images Veteran umpire Mark Carlson will serve as the crew chief of the World Series, which begins Friday in Los Angeles as the Dodgers meet the New York Yankees.
This will be the third World Series and first as crew chief for Carlson, who has more than 25 years' experience as a Major League Baseball umpire.
He previously worked the 2015 and 2020 series.
Joining Carlson on his seven-person crew are three umpires calling their first World Series -- Andy Fletcher, Mark Ripperger and Carlos Torres. The three other umps each will make their second World Series appearances -- Doug Eddings, Chad Fairchild and Todd Tichenor, who is a regular-season crew chief.
If Carlson rotates out of a game -- only six umpires are on the field at one time -- Tichenor will take over as crew chief for that game.
Umpires Cory Blaser and regular-season crew chief James Hoye will man the replay booth.
The Dodgers and Yankees will be appearing in their 12th World Series, the most between any two teams. It is their first series since 1981.
