Xavier Holds On Against Creighton After Pair Of Fouls On Would-Be Game-Winners
Fifth-ranked Xavier avoided its fourth loss of the season thanks to a fortuitous foul call with less than a second remaining, just moments after fouling a Creighton three-point attempt that gave the Bluejays a very short-lived lead.
Down 70-68, Creighton’s Ronnie Harrell Jr. missed a three-pointer with five seconds remaining, but officials declared that the Musketeers’ Trevon Bluiett fouled him in the attempt. After sinking all three free throws, Harrell dropped back on defense only to watch Xavier’s Quentin Goodin take the inbound pass and go coast-to-coast, eventually drawing a foul in the final second off of, you guessed it, Harrell.
Depending on your perspective, that foul was even less legitimate than the one called moments earlier, but either way it sent Goodin to the line where he sank both shots and provided Xavier a 72-71 victory. Creighton falls to 18-7, 8-5 in the Big East.
