Yoenis Cespedes Credits First Mets HR To Rally Parakeet
Deadline acquisition Yoenis Cespedes’s eighth-inning home run put the finishing touches on the Mets’ 3-0 win over the Rockies last night, a victory that put them 3.5 games up in the NL East. It was Cespedes’s first homer as a Met, and he says it’s all about his neon tribute to a little avian gatecrasher.
A little parakeet-thing was flitting around Citi Field (there are colonies of parrots and parakeets throughout the outer boroughs), and Cespedes jokingly claimed his neon arm sleeve was a tribute to the bird.
“I see other people using it, a different color,’’ he said. “I just used it because I know there was a bird in the field and I just wanted to look like the bird, and it would bring me some luck.’’
